- Meet James Smith (23) and Anahera Smith (22).Anahera is half Māori and half pākeha and James.They are about to go tothe hospital to give birth to their very first pēpē. Anahera has a strong connection to her Māori side and wishes to keep the placenta after the birth.

- I can’t push anymore!
- Just keep pushing Anahera!
- After 18 hours of labour
- While Anahera had her emergency c section, because of COVID James was not allowed in. One of the nurses threw out the placenta without consulting the doctor or patient.

- Why did you throw out my sons placenta?! You should have checked with someone before you did that.
- Of course they were furious as to why the nurse threw out her pēpēs placenta, when they should’ve asked
- I’m sorry, I didn’t think you would want to keep it. I didn’t know you were Māori.
- That is not nice to assume what my ethnicity is. We already stated in our birth plan that we wanted to keep the placenta for our cultural beliefs.
- We have to now do a emergency c section.
