Mohandas Ghandi was born in 1869 on October 2nd in coastal Gujarat, western India. He was born to a Hindu family.
He trained in law in London and eventually moved to South Africa where he lived for 21 years and had a family.
In South Africa, he first started to fight for civil rights, but in 1915, he returned to India.
He became leader of the Indian National Congress in 1921 and he lead various campaigns all across the country for human rights he also started to wear a loin cloth that year to help poorer people Identify with him
Ghandi strongly believed that India should gain independence from British Colonial rule and even went on hunger strike as part of his protests.
Ghandi fought to bring unity amongst people of all religions and became known as the Father of India. He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu nationalist, The anniversary of his birth is a national holiday in India, known as Gandhi Jayanti,
