  • Mohandas Ghandi was born in 1869 on October 2nd in coastal Gujarat, western India. He was born to a Hindu family.
  • He trained in law in London and eventually moved to South Africa where he lived for 21 years and had a family.
  • In South Africa, he first started to fight for civil rights, but in 1915, he returned to India.
  • He became leader of the Indian National Congress in 1921 and he lead various campaigns all across the country for human rights he also started to wear a loin cloth that year to help poorer people Identify with him
  • Ghandi strongly believed that India should gain independence from British Colonial rule and even went on hunger strike as part of his protests.
  • Ghandi fought to bring unity amongst people of all religions and became known as the Father of India. He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu nationalist, The anniversary of his birth is a national holiday in India, known as Gandhi Jayanti,
