  • long ago there was a wise man named Finnegas. He was a poet known throughout Ireland for his vast knowledge and knew more about the way of the world than any other person in Ireland.
  • When Fionn mac Cumhaill was a young boy, he was sent to live with Finnegas to learn from him. He helped Finnegas around the house and did chores such as cooking and cleaning for the old man in exchange for stories and knowledge.
  • Although he had much knowledge, Finnegas did'nt know everything and he sometimes couldn't answer some of Fionn's questions. So he went fishing to search for the Salmon of Knowledge. A fish that, once consumed, could give a person all the knowledge int he world.
  • After years of trying, he eventually caought the fish and gave it to Fionn to cook for him, but he told Fionn not to taste it at all. As Fionn was cooking the fidh, a blistter formed on the skin. He popped it and the liquid burned him so he put his finger in his mouth.
  • When the fish was done Finnegas ate it but felt no different than before. He asked Fionn if he had touched the fish at all and he explained about the blister. Finnegas told him that it was a magic fish and that he would have all the knowledge in the world if he ate the whole thing.
  • Fionn ate the fish and was suddenly was taken over with knowledge and was able to answer any question anyone asked. Finnegan told him he had to leave as now there was no more he could teach him. Fionn grew up to be a wise poet, leader and warrior.
