- As the wind hissed in the night, a rider came up to the old inn. He saw Bess at the window.
- And he went and met with his beloved
- I'm after a prize tonight
- I'll turn him in to the Brits
- As he spoke to her, Tim the ostler had overheard, and was making plans to get rid of this dumb highwayman.
- Look for me by moonlight.
- The highwayman did not arrive, but the redcoats did. They strung up Bess to her bed. She heard the Highwayman coming. She knew if she didn't do something they'd kill the highwayman, so...
- I'm tied up, but I think I can reach the trigger
- ...she shot herself hoping the highwayman would hear the shot and go back
- The highwayman heard the shot and he spurred west. When he found out Bess was dead, he attacked the redcoats, only to get killed.
- and some say their spirits still walk the Earth.
