  • American Isolationism
  • Americans during the 1930's were in favor of American Isolationism. They did not want to start or get entangled in another war after their experiences with World War 1. Isolationists believed that they should advance their freedom and democracy in any way, other than war.
  • Mussolini’s Invasion of Ethiopia
  • In October of 1935, Mussolini, the prime minister of Italy, orders a massive attack and invasion on Ethiopia. The Ethiopian spears and swords had no chance against the Italian planes, tanks, and guns. The British allowed Italian troops to pass through their canals in order to get to Ethiopia. By letting them through they hoped to have peace with Europe. 
  • Austria and the Anschluss
  • On November 5th. 1937, Hitler announced his plans to take over Austria and Czechoslovakia and add adopt them into the German Empire. In March 1938, Hitler sent in his army and marched into Austria and annexed it. Britain and france disregarded their pledge to protect Austrian independence because they didn't want to get involved.
  • The Nonaggression Pact/Nazi-Soviet Pact
  • On August 23rd, 1939, the Soviet Union and Germany surprised the world by signing the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact. This meant that the two countries publicly agreed to never attack each other. This allows Germany to fight in war without fear of a Soviet attack.
  • Soviet Union Invades Eastern Poland, Baltic States, and Finland
  • On September 17th, 1939, Joseph Stalin sent Soviet troops to take over the eastern half of Poland. Stalin also moved to the north of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. They all fell without any problems for the Soviet troops. When they attacked Finland they had trouble. With over 1 million soviet troops outnumbering the Finland army, The soviet fleets still suffered heavy loses to their army due to the weather conditions. The soviet fleet finally won on March, 1940, due to the sheer force of numbers they had.
  • Hitler Invades the Soviet Union
  • June 22nd, 1941, Hitler and his German army began a mass invasion and attack on the Soviet Union. Although the Soviet Union had the largest army in the world, they were not prepared for this attack. The Germans burned and destroyed everything in their path for 500 miles week after week. Hitler starved the people of Russia by destroying all of the warehouses with food. Although, they still wouldn't surrender and didn't give up. The Germans ended up losing the battle and 500,000 of their soldiers died because Hitler refused to retreat. This was a crucial turning point in the war.
