  • "In order to settle here in Texas you will need to follow 4 strict rules"
  • "We are not about to follow those stupid rules!"

  • "Texas is now an independent state, we have every right to annex it to the U.S!"
  • "No! Texas is our territory and nothing can change that!"
  • American settlers moved into Texas and had to follow 4 strict rules. The rules consisted of converting to Catholicism, pledging their loyalty to Mexico, living in the Texas territory for at least 10 years, and giving up slavery.
  • "Texas clearly ends in the Nueces River so it is our territory."
  • Americans refused to follow those rules and sought for independence from Mexico.

  • Furthermore, there was a border dispute between the U.S. and Mexico.
  • "No it doesn't! It ends at the Rio Grande River so it is our territory."
  • Mexico and the U.S. collided at the border. Mexico felt threatened and opened fire.
