Storyboard Text

  • Germain planned to divide the rebels by taking control of the Hudson River, cutting New England off from the other colonies. The plan was that General Howe would take his army North to New York City and General Burgoyne would head south to Albany. General Howe did not follow the plan and went to Philadelphia instead in hopes to lure out General Washington and have one big final battle to end the war.
  • General Burgoyne left with 8,000 soldiers in June of 1777 and moved slowly to Saratoga Springs. Burgoyne moved slowly through the rough wilderness so when he arrived at Saratoga Springs on the Hudson River the area had already been swarmed by the militia.
  • The rebel's army outnumbered Burgoyne's army but Burgoyne ordered an attack anyway. The rebels attacked back until October 17, 1777, Burgoyne had accepted his defeat and surrendered.
  • This was a major point in the war, before this victory most had believed that America could not win the war. Now the Americans had proved themselves, and people knew that they could fight back.
  • Shortly after America's recent success the French and Spanish joined their war effort. France and Spain supplied the Americans with money, troops, weapons, and warships.
  • This is General George Washington and his army. They are fighting on America's side for their freedom with help from France and Spain.
