What were indulgences, and why were they considered bad?

Why did Luther post the 95 Theses?

The main reasons for the reformation started from when L uther had put the 95 theses. It also happened when the practice of selling indulgences and was a payment to the catholic church.
Indulgences can be purchased in order to reduce the punishment you where owed for your sins from the church. They're bad because they had tricked people by saying that if they committed a sin it would be forgiven or have a less punishment of their sins, but they just wanted their money. Luther and many other believers thought it was against the idea of Jesus and the church.
He posted the 95 theses for acting on his own belief he wrote the Disputation of the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences also known as the 95 theses. It is a list of questions and propositions for the debate it had happened on October 31, 1517.
