- First battle of bull run: the union tries to push forces to Richmond with the help of stonewall Jackson and confederate reinforcements the cs wins and demoralizes the north.
- Battle of Fort Sumter: was the first battle of the civil war in which the confederacy laid siege to fort Sumter before resources could get to it

- New Orleans: The union army attacks and captures the city on ground and by sea the city is purposefully set on fire to destroy anything that could help the union, union victory.

- Battle of Vicksburg: general grant sieged the town of Vicksburg for months the citizens eventually ran out of all supplies and gave in giving the union full control of the Mississippi, Union victory
