  • "You have said that twice, sir." (245)
  • Explanation:In Act ll of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Reverend Hale has arrived to question the Proctors prior to seeing them in court. Hale asks John Proctor to recite the ten commandments that are stated in the Bible. John Proctor recites them all with hesitation yet forgets the commandment about prohibiting adultery. This is ironic because considering his affair with Abigail, he has a guilty conscience about his sin of adultery. Proctor has not incorporated this specific commandment into his life, so it fails to remain in his memory. The conversation between the three characters demonstrate that John truly did have an affair with Abigail and that Elizabeth is aware of this. To hide John Proctor's mistake, he acknowledges to Hale that between Elizabeth and him, they both understand and know all ten commandments.
