Welcome to life in the colonies during salutary neglect. That means King George III is letting us run the colonies and creating our own way of life!
White men (with property) voting (structure of government)
Hurry! You must come quick to vote, I'll need to see some proof that you really own land, you look too young.
That night...
The Quartering Act (1763-1775, acts of Tyranny)
LET ME IN!! I AM STAYING THE NIGHT!
King George III has really gotten out of control, this is ridiculous!
During salutary neglect, the colonists established a new lifestyle and voted representatives for each colony to govern themselves in the new world. This was all going great until the colonists wanted to expand west.
Boston Massacre (1763-1775, how the colonists reacted)
WE WILL BE INDEPENDENT ONE DAY!
While the colonies were voting representatives, only a portion of them were able to vote. The requirements were a white adult male (21 or older) who owned property. This means women and any African Americans were not allowed to vote.
Boston Tea Party (1763-1775, how the colonists reacted)
HEY, STOP IN THE NAME OF THE KING!!
During the Acts of Tyranny, King George III was taxing and adding laws to the colonies without their consent. One of these acts was the Quartering Act. This means that any British soldiers in need of a place to stay or food/water could invite themselves in and stay as long as needed. This upset the colonists because the British were invading their privacy.
Signing the Declaration of Independence (1776)
(I re-created the painting) The Boston Massacre was not what it sounds like. It was really a small fight between some colonists and British soldiers and it got out of hand, the colonists were throwing snowballs, and the British fired a few bullets (not to say that it was ok), but it wasn't at all a massacre.
The Boston Tea Party was a big event that was planned and went perfectly. It was the Sons of Liberty who invaded a British ship and threw around $18,000 of tea into the Boston Harbor, King George III was furious and taxed the colonists more until the debt was paid off, this just made the colonists angrier.
NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!
On July 4, 1776, we signed the document that made us free from Great Britain. After a long seven years of fighting, America was free.
