  • I wasn't sure which book I was going to ask for; but, I went in, I handed the hat to thedoorman, I received the password and went upstairs. On the stairs, I thought to ask the Grande Encyclopédie, letter J in order to consult the article on Java and the Javanese language. No sooner said than done.I learned, after a few minutes, that Java was a large island of theSonda archipelago, a Dutch colony, and Javanese, the group's agglutinating languageMaleo-Polynesian, possessed remarkable literature and written in charactersderived from the old hindu alphabet. The Encyclopédie gave me indications of works on the Malay language andI had no doubts about consulting one of them. I copied the alphabet, its pronunciationfigured and left. I walked the streets, wandering and chewing letters. On minehead danced hieroglyphs; from time to time I consulted my notes;two
  • I went into the gardens and wrote these dolls in the sand to keep them well in thememory and get your hand used to writing them.At night, when I could enter the house unseen, to avoid indiscretionsquestions from the foreman, I was still in the room to swallow my Malay "a-b-c",and I so assiduously carried out the purpose that in the morning I knew it perfectly.I convinced myself that this was the easiest language in the world and left; but not so soonnot to meet the person in charge of renting the rooms:
  • — Senhor Castelo, when will your account be settled? Then I answered him, with the loveliest hope:"Soon... Wait a minute... Be patient... I'm going to be appointed teacherof Javanese, and...There the man interrupted me:"What the hell is that, Senhor Castelo?"I enjoyed the fun and attacked the man's patriotism:— It's a language that's spoken around Timor. Do you know where it is?Oh! naive soul! The man forgot my debt and told me withthat strong speaking of the Portuguese:— Me, I don't know; but I heard that these are lands thatwe have it to the sides of Macau. And do you know that, Senhor Castelo?Excited by this happy exit that Javanese gave me, I went back to looking for theannouncement.
  • There he was. I eagerly decided to propose myself to the language teacheroceanic. I wrote the answer, went to the newspaper and left the letter there. then I came backto the library and continued my Javanese studies. I haven't made much progress.on that day, I don't know if judging the Javanese alphabet as the only knowledge necessary for aMalay language teacher or if I have been more involved in the bibliography andliterary history of the language he was going to teach. After two days, I received a letter to go and speak to Dr. ManuelFeliciano Soares Albernaz, Baron of Jacuecanga, on Rua Conde de BonfimI remember well what number.
  • And I must not forget that in the meantime I continuedstudying my Malay, that is, the Javanese guy. In addition to the alphabet, I learned thename of some authors, also ask and answer "how are you?" - andtwo or three rules of grammar, backing all this knowledge with twenty words of thelexicon. You can't imagine the great difficulties I struggled with, to arrange thefour hundred reis of the trip! It's easier - rest assured - to learn Javanese...I went on foot.
