  • Fire ants were a hazard to military men in WWII, which resulted in the use of a pesticide called DDT to rid the species as much as possible
  • The pesticide that was releases ended up being fatal to most wildlife, hardly effecting the fire ants. Additionally, the pesticide was also fatal to humans longterm.
  • In 1932 A woman named Rachel Carson, was the second women to ever be hired at the Bureau full time
  • In 1962 Rachel Carson Published a novel called Silent Spring explaining how harmful DDT was to not only wildlife, but also humans
  • Carson shortly died of cancer 2 years later in 1964, but still made a huge impact with her beliefs on continuing generations and advocated for nature even though she was no longer present
  • In honor of Carson, President Richard Nixon created the environmental protection agency. And following that in 1972 the EPA issues a partial ban on DDT. This shows everyone that even though Carson was no longer with us, she continued to change things throughout our world, and her beliefs, as well as her was always respected and acted on.
