- Della went to see Madame Sofronie to cut her hair for $20. Then Della went and bought a nice chain for Jim for his Christmas present.

- Della is scared for Jim to see her hair. When Jim gets home, he is shocked to see Della's short hair.

- They exchange gifts. Della and Jim soon realize that he bought her the combs she wanted by selling his watch, and she had cut her hair to buy the chain for his watch.
- Della and Jim realize they have both made sacrifices for each other and decide to put the gifts away for right now and save them.
- The best gifts involve sacrifice.
