- The war began when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was murder, this event catapulted into a war that spread across Europe that lasted until 1918.
- Within a week, Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Serbia had lined up against Austria-Hungary and Germany, and World War I had begun.
- WW1 stuck out from previous battles, they used a new tatic for fighting called trenches, they dug out and used them to there advantages. They also used poison gas, Machine Guns, tanks and aircraft.
- The US decided to get involved when ally country Great Britian intercepted a message from Germany to Mexico telling them to attack the US and in exchange Germany would help them get land back they had lost. Once Britian found this message they gave it to the US.
- Russia was at first very excited to join the war at first. They thought it would lead to money, food and everything else they lacked. They had recruited the biggest army in the world but didn't have the supplies and weapons they needed so many died.
- The cost of the war included,Nearly 9 million soldiers were killed in battle.Around 11 million civilians were killed, Millions more were wounded or taken prisoner. In Germany, Russia, and France, almost an entire generation of young men died or were wounded. Most farmland and cities were completely destroyed and right after the war an outbreak of influenza spread across the globe killing up to 50 million more.
