  • Nitrogen is all around us, 78% of the atmosphere is nitrogen... also how am I flying?
  • Jimmy, here! We are currently soaring at 30mph, please remain in your seats, folks!!
  • ...Oh shoot
  • AAAAHHHHHH!!!!
  • Most plants can't take in the nitrogen from the atmosphere directly!!
  • .... plants need the help from bacteria to get nitrogen.
  • Fixing-bacteria directly in the roots of plants make useable nitrogen called nitrate (NO3).
  • ...Oddly convenient mattress....
  • Organisms like this caterpillar will eat the plants, then they will poop. That poop will then be decomposed by bacteria and other organisms. The bacteria will then go through the cycle of turning the nitrogen into ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. ALternatively, they can die and then decompose. Either way, the nitrogen is back into the atmosphere.
  • Fixing-bacteria in the soil take the nitrogen and make ammonia, nitrifying bacteria can then make it into nitrites and then nitrates. Denitrifying bacteria can revert nitrate back into N2 and then release this back into the atmosphere.
  • Too much nitrogen from car and factory emissions can cause overgrowth of algae, this algae can then take over the entire water system its living in. This in turn, causes a collapse in many water ecosystems. Loss of biodiversity occurs as well.
  • This river is lucky... for now
