- At the very end of the first Garfield game, Nick narrates, “I drove hard into the lane. I faked to Trent’s side, the defender bit, and I dished the ball to Luke, a soft pass right in his hands” (Deuker 167).
- When Trent is confessing that Michael getting shot was his fault, he says, "And the shooting? That was my fault. Because once Zack got out I rode him, telling him he had to do something to get back at Ushakov, something big." (Dueker 189).

- Glad you came.
- When Trent tells Nick that he killed the birds and knew that Zack was going to shoot Michael, Nick responds, "then don't wait until after the Garfield game. Go as soon as you can, tonight even" (Dueker 190)

- When Trent starts to walk onto the court during the final game, Nick narrates, "Then the chant began. 'Dawson! Dawson! Dawson!' We couldn't see him but our fans could. He was coming up the aisle toward the court" (Dueker 204).

- When Nick comes to Luke's barbeque, Luke says, "I'm glad you came. Glad you came" (Deuker 171).
- While Nick and Trent are leaving the basketball championship, Nick says, "Not a bad looking day" (Dueker 212).
