  • Act II Scene II

  • Act II Scene II
  • This is he, my master said
  • While Oberon is waiting on Puck, Oberon sees Demetrius and Helena in the woods. He makes himself invisible so he can spy on their conversation. He overhears Demetrius telling Helena to go away and that he does not love her but he is in love with Hermia. When Puck returns, Oberon decides to help Helena out and tells Puck to put the juice from the flower into Demetrius' eyes so that he might love Helena back.
  • Act III Scene I
  • Oberon arrives and puts the juice from the ‘love-in-idleness’ flower in Titania's eyes. Hermia and Lysander have got lost in the woods and decide to sleep until morning. Lysander wants to sleep near Hermia but for modesty’s sake, she convinces him to sleep away from her.
  • Act III Scene I
  • Puck sees sleeping Lysander and mistakes him for Demetrius. He then puts the juice from the flower on Lysander’s eyes. Shortly afterward, Helena arrives. She has been chasing Demetrius but stops when she sees Lysander sleeping. She is worried that he could be hurt. He then wakes up and immediately falls in love with her. Helena thinks he is making fun of her and tries to remind him about Hermia. She runs away and he chases her. Hermia then comes to find Lysander but he is gone so she goes to look for him.
  • Act III Scene I
  • The local carpenters meet in the woods for their rehearsal. When they start to rehearse they realize there are some problems with the play, including ‘the killing’, ‘the lion’, and how they can symbolize the ‘moonlight’ and ‘the chink of a wall’ that the lovers meet through. They decide that one of them will come through the bush of thorns and a lantern. They want to make sure the ladies aren't feared with the killing and the lion so they decide to add a prologue and Bottom insists is written 'eight and eight'.
  • Sir, I can help write the prologue and I insist it is written in 'eight and eight'.
  • While Bottom is preparing, Puck stumbles upon the group. Puck uses his own magic to transform Bottom’s head into the head of an ‘ass’ or donkey before he makes his entrance in the play. When Bottom comes in, the other mechanicals shout out and run away from him. Bottom believes them to be playing a joke on him and think they are doing it to ‘make an ass of me, to fright me,' and so he starts to sing a song, hoping they will hear him.
  • I shall make a fool of him
  • Bottom’s singing accidentally wakes Titania, who was sleeping nearby, and as she opens her eyes the first thing she sees is Bottom with the head of an ass. At first, Bottom tries to leave, but Titania commands him to stay with her, and then she calls her fairy attendants to look after him. With the fairies looking after him, Bottom is led away to Titania’s fairy bower.
