  • In August 30, 1813 a faction of the Creek Indian Nation including John Ross called the Red Sticks under Red Eagle, slew nearly 250 Alabama settlers in a brutal manner, resulting in the calling out of two 2,500 man forces, one under Jackson to punish and stop the Indians.

  • On October 17, 1828 the Cherokee elected John Ross as principal chief. The Cherokee Council passed a series of laws creating a bicameral national government.

  • John Ross was the most important Cherokee political leader of the nineteenth century. He helped establish the Cherokee national government and served as the Cherokee Nation's principal chief for almost 40 years.

  • John Ross went to the Head of Coosa (Georgia), he built a comfortable home, increased his slave holdings, built a ferry, and worked nearly two hundred acres of farmland. By the 1830s, he was one of the wealthiest men in the Cherokee Nation.

  • After a period of relative peace and national tranquility, Ross again came to national attention during the American Civil War of the 1860s when he led the tribe through the tense disputes over Cherokee allegiance to the Union.
