- Hester Prynne is accused of adultery in Puritan Boston in the seventeenth century.Hester refuses to disclose the father of her 3-month-old daughter Pearl.Hester is sentenced to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her chest for the rest of her life as a punishment.
- CLIMAX
- No Arthur....
- "Roger Chillingworth," Hester's long-lost husband, has finally arrived in Boston, and he is furious.He devotes himself to finding Hester's lover in order to inflict vengeance. He pledges to keep Hester's identity a secret.Meanwhile, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale is suffering from an unidentified illness that appears to be the result of an internal conflict.To assist the injured minister, Chillingworth disguises himself as a doctor.
- FALLING ACTION
- When Pearl is seven, Hester, Pearl, and Dimmesdale reunite, and they resolve to go to Europe together after Dimmesdale's farewell sermon, which is scheduled for Election Day. With each passing day, Dimmesdale gets more unwell, and he lays his palm over his heart in misery. Chillingworth learns of the family's connection and intention, and he buys a ticket on the same ship as them.
- RESOLUTION
- Dimmesdale preaches with zeal and fresh vigor on Election Day.He concludes by summoning Hester and Pearl to the scaffold, where he admits his role in Hester's adultery and his guilt for not stepping forward seven years ago as Pearl's father.He rips his shirt apart, revealing a "A" etched onto his skin, and then he passes away.
- The people of the town can't believe what they've witnessed, and some even deny Dimmesdale had the "A" tattooed on his breast.Within a year following Dimmesdale's death, Chillingworth dies and gives his whole estate to Pearl, making her extremely wealthy.Soon later, Pearl and Hester leave New England for Europe.

- Hester comes to Boston many years later and inherits the small cottage she and Pearl formerly occupied.Even though she isn't required to, she still wears the scarlet letter, and the ladies of the town look to her for counsel and respect her.She passes away in Boston and is laid to rest at Dimmesdale with a scarlet A on her tombstone.
