- when Maya was eight, she was attacked by her mother's boyfriend, after this event she decided to go mute. The boyfriend was sent to jail and it was rumored that later he was murdered by maya's uncles.

- after that maya decided to stop talking. She was scared that her voice killed one person and that if she ever talks again she might kill someone else. Her silence was very impactful to her mother and relatives and made them very sad

- During this time, her favorite activity was to read books, she loved books and had read every single one in the library. Her teacher, Ms. Flower always helped her develop her voice and was a great supporter who always helped maya. It is because of her that Maya was able to start pronouncing a few words
