- He made sure that the people of his country depended on him for money and food so he had more control
- He likened himself to the sun, because he felt the world revolved around him
- He forced many Huguenots to flee the country because he disagreed with the protestant religion
- Louis XIV tried and failed to claim the Spanish throne and merge France and Spain
- As a punishment, Louis was forced to give up a lot of territory
