  • P.g.- 69-71, 87 show that Hannah (Chaya) and the other Jews were forced to give up their belongings and go on to a crammed train. the rabbi encourages them to give up their belongings and tells them that it is all for the best and that they will rise in the end. "We will share what we have. For are we not brothers or sisters?"
  • P.g.-94. This picture helps the theme of the story because Chaya was forced to shave her head for an unjust reason and starts to cry but gitl wipes her tears and says "Cry no more for these monsters."
  • p.g 100- when Chaya was receiving her number the man said she was wearing his daughters dress and that she had the same name he told her "Live for my Chaya, for all the Chayas."
  • p.g. 120- hope in times of despair is found in this section of the book because when Rivka listens to Chaya explain and remember each letter and number of the tattoo it makes Chaya feel as though she was finally able to do something right. "Chaya says she will live."
  • p.g. 131- Without realizing it Chaya's birthday came and Gitl got her a present. this showed Chaya that even in this terrible place she was still able to be a human being with a simple thing such as shoes. "you think i do not know my own nieces birthday?"
  • p.g. 144- when gitl tells Chaya there is a plan to escape it gives here hope that she might have a chance at life again after this. "there is a plan".
