1492 Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer for Spain, landed in the Americas. He was looking for a faster and safer route to Asia.
1519 Pineda, an explorer from Jamaica became the first European to observe the Texas Coast, and made a map of the Texas Coast and Gulf of Mexico.
1519 Hernan Cortes was sent to Mexico. Aztecs viewed him and his men as a gods because of his horses. He overthrew the Aztecs with their enemies, gave Spain a base of operations, the Aztecs gold made Spain rich.
1526 Cabeza de Vaca, and his crew crashed at Galveston Island.The Karwankawas gave them food & shelter. De Vaca and his men traveled to different tribes as medicine men and used this to stay friendly with Indians. Finally made his way to Mexico and told stories of the fabled story of the city of gold in Cibola.
1540 Coronado, and 1000 men went in search of the city of gold in Cibola. Instead they found the Grand Canyon, Pacific Ocean and present day Kansas, but never found the golden city.
1648 La Salle, a famous French explorer, convinced the King to build a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River.He arrived at Matagorda Bay instead and tried to establish friendly relations with the local Indians and built a fort.The colony had a lot of problems due to drought, so La Salle traveled to Mexico to get supplies. Along the way his men killed him and the local Indians destroyed the fort.
