- the French empire captured Indochina which consisted of: Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The people in Indochina were mainly poor farmers, however they had reserves of coal, zinc, tin and rubber.

- Japan invaded Indochina during WW2 and took their key resources. By 1925, 2 million people had starved to death
- This formed the Vietnam Independence league (Vietminh) led by Ho Chi Minh and Nguyen Vo Giap. The Vietminh captured most of Vietnam and on 2nd September 1950 declared Vietnam Independent. France did not accept this.
- In 1949, the Chinese government quickly became communist and provided supplies to and equipment to the Vietminh. The USA was concerned about the spread of communism and that Vietminh could be 'puppets' of China. In July 1950, Truman sent $15 million to help the French.
- Between 1946-54, France and Vietnam went to war over whether Vietnam was independent or not. Nguyen Vo Giap struggled against the well trained French soldiers. Vietnam used the guerilla technique to fight against France. French attempts to stop the Vietminh only increased the support for the rebels
- Dien Bien Phu was a French airbase in North West Vietnam. It held around 10,000 French soldiers but was surrounded by 50,000 Vietminh troops. The runaway was destroyed by the Vietminh bombing and the French ran out of supplies. The USA and Uk were unwilling to help. On May 7th 1954, the French surrendered.
