- My name is Frederick Douglass, I was born early in the 1800s, but the exact day is unknown as it is for most slaves. I live on Master Covey's plantation, I was sent here to work for a year. Covey is a cruel man. I get whipped several times and am worked to the fullest capacity.
- As I got older I was getting treated more harshly. One day, I got so sick and had sat down, but as I soon as I did cruel Covey came and started to hit me heavily. "Crack!" The sound of the hickory stick hitting my head was deafening.
- That evening, I decided I had enough, so I ran away. At the corner of my eye, I can see Covey chasing me, but I hid in time before he could catch up. I had the choice, to return and get whipped to death, or stay where I was and basically starve. "O death have mercy."
