Storyboard Text

  •  In January 1918, after 3 and a half years of war, the German people finally had something to celebrate. After years of stalemate, they had just beaten the Russians in the East and forced them to hand over a quarter of their best land.
  • By the middle of 1918 German was only producing half of the milk and 60% of the meat produced before the war. This was partly because many farmers had been drafted into the army. In the early summer of 1918, the Germans attacked and made a massive breakthrough along the Western Front. The German people were told that victory would soon be theirs. 
  • In the late summer of 1918, the allies launched a counterattack against the Germans. Soon the allies had broken through the German lines and German lands were close to being threatened. By September it was clear that Germany would have to make peace.
  • In early October 1918, a new government was formed in Germany led by Prince Max of Baden. It included members of the Reichstag and was Germany’s first parliamentary government.
  •  At the end of October 1918, in the Kiel mutiny, sailors at Kiel refused to put to sea and attack the British navy. 9th November, Kaiser Wilhelm, realising he now had little support made the decision to abdicate, realising how much little support he had. 
  • Two days later the Chancellor of the newly declared German Republic, Frederick Ebert accepted the Armistice on the basis of Wilson’s 14 points. He had Assembly on 19th January.
