Storyboard Text

  • The black box represents death and fear. The names go into the box and the one that is chosen is not the lucky winner but the one chosen to die. Every year the villagers uphold the tradition of stoning the person who gets the slip of paper with the black dot on it to death. The example of this is would be (line 328) "It isn't fair, it isn't right, Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her."
  • TONE
  • The imagery in this scene is a perfect summer day. Despite the horrors that happen later on in the story, it opens up with a pleasant setting. The text states, "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green."
  • This scene is an example of Denouement because it is the final part in the story. It's also when the plot is drawn together and explained and resolved. The quote that goes with this scene is when Mrs. Hutchinson screamed "It isn't fair, it isn't right" (line 324) and the villagers began to stone her to death.
  • The tone in "The Lottery" is suspenseful because you are uncertain of what the lottery if for. You also don't know what the black dot means and what the outcome of the story will be. An example of this would be (line 305-307) "It had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr. Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal-company office." because the black dot isn't explained into the very end.
