Storyboard Text

  • Ruth Lee Jones aka Dinah Washington was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on August, 29th 1924.
  • She started playing the piano and singing gospel in Chicago churches.To improve, she takes lessons with the famous violinist walter dyett.
  • At 16 she went on tour with Roberta Martins who accompanied her on the piano. At the same time she sings in clubs in the evening and during the day in a gospel group.
  • In 1942 she joined Lionel Hampton's group with whom she stayed for 1 year before starting her solo career.
  • She won a Grammy award in 1959 for her song "what a difference make day". 
  • She passed away prematurely on december, 14th 1963, from an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol.
