Storyboard Text

  • When tresses, like leaden clouds, have grayed,
  • What happened to my hair!
  • The sunlight that besieged us with its heat,
  • It's so hot outside.
  • Davis uses personification in the sonnet to connect to the reader's emotions. The speaker in the sonnet morns the loss of autumn. They describe the sunlight as, "cold and tired." This provides the reader with an image of the harshness of winter and lack of sunlight. The reader then sympathizes with the speaker's loss.
  • The Turn in line 7 changes the time frame that is being discussed. Prior to the Turn, the speaker is mourning the loss of autumn this year. After the Turn, the speaker shifts the focus to all fading autumns. They explore the concept of fading time. They leave the reader with a warning that the reader's autumn will also disappear. The author's Turn brings the theme into the sonnet. The theme is to embrace the time that is left before it fades.
  • Did something happen while I was gone?
  • Persepolis has crumbled back to dust.
  • Embrace what time remains; it will not last.
  • I better enjoy this weather before the snow gets here.
