- Matilda is a bright, young girl who loves to read. She lives with her two evil parents, who believe tv and looks are greater than anything else! She attends school and has a lovely teacher, Ms. Honey. Her school headmistress is named Mrs. Trunchbull. All of the children are scared of her, and rightfully so!
- Each week, Ms. Trunchbull comes into Matilda's first grade classroom to test the children. Ms. Honey warned them to be on their best behavior, and to address Ms. Trunchbull by name. Ms. Trunchbull is very mean to the children and tortures them when she comes to class!

- Matilda comes to school one Thursday when Ms. Trunchbull is in the classroom. Ms. Trunchbull is very mean, so some of the kids trick her and put a newt in her water jug. Ms. Trunchbull screams when she sees it, and then Matilda uses magic powers to tip the glass of water over!
- Ms. Honey notices Matilda during the glass tipping miracle. She asks Matilda to stay after class to talk to her. Matilda proves her powers to Ms. Honey, by performing a second miracle!
- Matilda learns a lot about Ms. Honey and Ms. Trunchbull's family. It turns out, Ms. Trunchbull is Ms. Honey's mean aunt! Matilda uses her powers and the new information she learned to scare Ms. Trunchbull. She writes a message from a "ghost" on the board and Ms. Trunchbull is very scared!
- In the end, Ms. Honey wins her house back from Ms. Trunchbull with Matilda's help. Matilda's family runs away to Spain, to escape her father's bad business and Ms. Honey agrees to let Matilda live with her!
