The first few pages of The Maze Runner are confusing and just describe how confused Thomas is. Thomas is the main protagonist in the story and he is a dynamic character. On the first page of the book, it explains, "My name is Thomas, he thought" (Dashner 1). Thomas was nervous and he didn't know where he was at the time. The box brought him up to the Glade, a place he would never expect.
Thomas appears like a normal teenage boy. He was thrown around a little in the box when he was coming up but overall, he looks like an average boy. When Chuck first sees Thomas and starts a conservation, Thomas wonders what he looks like. In the book, the author says, " I'd say you're sixteen. And in case you're wondering, five foot nine ... brown hair" (Dashner 15). The book describes him as 16 year old with brown hair and in a t shirt.
If I could describe Thomas in a few words, I would say he is courageous and heroic. Unfortunately, Alby got stung and Minho was trying to get him out of the maze and it was obvious that they both wouldn't get out of the maze. It was closing right at the time they were trying to get out. Thomas ran into the maze when he knew that it was practically suicide but he wanted to save his new friends. In the book, the author describes, "He squeezed past the connecting rods and stepped into the maze" (Dashner 112). This shows how brave and helpful Thomas was in the story.
Help! Someone help!
No Thomas, no!
In the beginning, when Thomas comes out of the box, he doesn't know what is going on and what is happening. He is also concerned for himself and doesn't understand why this is going on. The only thing that he remembered was that his name is Thomas and that he just came up in a metal, dusty box. In the book, it explains, " Where I am? Why?" (Dashner 6). He is genuinely confused and cannot only remember certain things such as his name.
Who I am and why am I here?
In this scene, Thomas has finally gained some more confidence and he went through the changing and remembered many things about his past life. He starts explaining why he is going to go through with this plan and how many things he has remembered. In the book, the author illustrates, "I remember a gathering and we need a plan" (Dashner 300). He knows new things about WICKED and what really happened in their past lives.
I have a way to escape the maze but it is risky and dangerous!
In this scene, Thomas and the other gladers who followed him are on a rescue bus. Thomas is greatly upset and overwhelmed because Chuck has been shot and he died. Chuck was a very important character and person to the book and Thomas and it caused him lots of pain.
