"The closet door stood open; he had been packing his things away for the winter, in a few minutes he would be driving back to civilization."
"As he looked at the shelf on which liquor stood, his smile was not attractive . All the bottles were unopened, except one quart of bourbon which was placed invitingly in front, a whiskey glass by itself. "
"She caught her breath at his cruel vindictiveness as one by one he dropped the tablets into the bottle and held it up to watch them dissolve.... The woman's face was pale. 'Don't do it, Judson,' she pleaded, 'it's horrible - it's murder.' "
Judson and his wife are preparing to leave their lake cabin and head back to the city. Judson is packing some of the things valuable to him away. As he is standing in front of the cupboard, his wife walks in.
"She had made up her mind to tell Alec's wife . Someone had to know....As she went down the path, he started to close the closet door, and then paused as he remembered his hunting boots out side on the porch."
As he puts his valuables away, he discovers that someone has drank half a bottle of his whiskey. He pulls out the bottle and examines it, very angry and upset.
"A chipmunk, hearing Judson's heavy tread, left the acorn it was about to add to it's store within the cabin wall and disappeared. When reaching for his boots, Judson stepped upon that acorn. His foot slid from under him and his head struck the table."
Judson gets two pills, putting them into the bottle. His wife, who does not approve and is worried for the burglar, stands nearby. She tries to protest, however her husband is too stubborn.
Judson's wife leaves to go tell Alec's wife about the whiskey poisoning. As Alec gets closer to the cabin, Judson realizes that he left his boots outside on the table, which was on the porch. He heads out to retrieve them, leaving the cupboard door open.
When Judson heads outside, his footsteps scare away a squirrel and the squirrel leaves his acorn behind, running in fright. As Judson reaches out for his boots he trips on that acorn and falls into the table, his head hitting it hard before falling unconscious.
When Judson kind of comes to, Alec is right there next to him, offering him a bottle of whiskey from the cupboard. Alec believes that it will fully wake Judson up. Since Judson is dazed and half-conscious , he drinks from the whiskey, never remembering the pills he put it to a whiskey bottle.
"Alec's strong arm was supporting his head as he lay on the porch, a kindly voice saying 'It wasn't much of a fall, Mr. Webb . You aren't cut none; just knocked out for a minute. Here, take this. It'll pull you together.' A small whiskey glass was pressed to Judson's lips. Dazed and half- conscious he drank.."
