Storyboard Text

  • A long time ago in the year 1666, a well known physicist by the name of Isaac Newton sat under a tree to enjoy his afternoon.
  • All of the sudden, an apple dropped from its initial position on the tree and landed right next to Isaac Newton, just barely missing him.
  •
  •
  •
  • Isaac Newton then began to wonder how the apple was able to simply fall from the tree and onto the ground.
  • Newton concluded that there must be a force acting on all falling objects, because without an active force, the apple wouldnot have been set into motion.
  • Newton went home began his work on the theory of gravitation. This theory stated that every particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers.
  • Newton finally published his theory in 1687, along with a formula: F = Gmm/r^2. While newton couldn't accurately calculate the gravitational force between the apple and the earth because he did not know the mass of the earth, his formula still applies to the laws of physics in our present time. Because we now know the radius and mass of the earth, we can calculate the accurate gravitational force the apple experienced in its fall.
  • F = G(5.972x10^24)(.102)/6378100^2F = .998 Newtons
  • We know that the mass of the earth is 5.972 x 10^24 kg and that the radius is 6378.1 kilometers.
  • And given that the mass of Newton's apple is approximately 102 grams, we can calculate the force between the apple and the earth.
