Storyboard Text

  • "'You have until the count of three to disperse'" (24.124).
  • '"Khalil lived!'" (24.125).
  • "'Shut up! We're not gonna die'" (25.8).
  • '"Man, we can't die up in here. I don't wanna die'" (25.6).
  • "Things will never be the way they used to" (26.25).
  • This moment is extremely significant to the overall story as it symbolizes how far Starr has grown from the beginning of the novel. When Khalil first died, she was terrified to speak out as she was afraid it would ruin her name and her family's name, but now, she understands that if she wants society to change its views, she needs to fight for it.
  • This scene adds great importance to the story because it creates a conflict on whether Chris, Starr, DeVante, and Seven are going to make it out alive from the store. Seeing the store in flames has a big effect as Starr and Seven grew up in that store, and it was a major part of both of their childhoods, causing tension among the readers regarding if it will be okay or not.
  • In this moment, Starr is texting Hailey the day after the riots and fire, and Hailey is apologizing to Starr for all that she has been through. This part of the book is tremendously noteworthy because Starr has finally understood what real friendship means and that Hailey isn't a good person no matter how hard she tries to make up for all that she has done. Starr is finally starting to make decisions to benefit herself.
