- The witches plan to meet with Macbeth, Macbeth and Banquo come back from battle. The witches tell Macbeth that he will be promoted to Thane of Cawdor and then King and that Banquo's children will be king one day too. Ross arrives to tell Macbeth that he is Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth cannot stop thinking about what has happened.
- Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth informing her about all that the witches said. She is excited at the idea of becoming queen but she wants to kill the king so this can happen asap. She is worried that Macbeth is too kind to do this so she asks evil spirits to make her strong like a man. Macbeth isn't keen on this plan and Lady Macbeth isn't nice to him until he agrees to do what she said.
- King Duncan goes to stay at Macbeth's castle. Lady Macbeth has got the guards drunk. A floating dagger with blood on it points to Duncan's room. Macbeth is shocked. He kills the king and the guards and Lady Macbeth helps him plant the dagger on the guards. Macduff then finds the king dead. Macbeth confesses to killing the guards and says he did it as he was so upset about what 'they' did. Duncan's sons are scared that they may be on the list as they are now suspicious so they run away. Macbeth is shortly after made king.
- Macbeth invites Banquo to a banquet and he is asking him a lot of questions. Then he remembered what the witches said and realised it could be a threat to his position. He came to the conclusion that it is best that they are killed so he gets a group of thugs to brutally stab Banquo and fleance but he got away. At a party later, Macbeth claims to see the ghost of Banquo and everyone is acting strangely.
- Macbeth asks the witches to tell him what will happen. Several ghosts appear and tell him to keep an eye on Macduff, they tell him he will be safe until the woods start climbing up to his castle. They also say that no man born by woman can kill him. He believes he is invincible. Macbeth gives orders for Macduff’s wife and young family to be assassinated.
- Lady Macbeth’s gentlewoman calls the doctor. Lady Macbeth has been having bad dreams because she feels guilty about murdering the king. In her sleep, she talks about what happened. The doctor watches and feels that he has heard too much. He says that she needs a priest, not a doctor. Macbeth hears his wife has killed herself, and this is not what he needed! Macbeth is informed that there are trees moving up towards the castle. Its the English army camouflaged with bushes and sticks.
