A herd of highland cattle in the meadows of rural scotland. It was the midst of summer. The days were long and the nights were short.. The herd spent their time grazing, navigating through the weeds to ensure they only selected the forage they wanted. The herd consisted of 2 bulls and 5 heifers. A very special heifer was expecting something one night.
The herd gathered around her. They surrounded her with warmth and comfort. The wind whistled through her fuzzy ears and rustled up her long brown hair.. She settled into the softest grassed spot in the meadow. The sun set over the hill, and darkness fell upon them. The only light provided was from the glistening of the moon and the sky’s stars.
Time passed and the heifers calf had arrived. The mother heifer noticed something peculiar about her calf. Not one, but two pairs of eyes stared back at her. Her eyes deepened with worry. She wondered what the farm boys would do to her monster of a calf.
The herd's ears tipped back as they began to hear the farm boy's truck driving out towards the meadow. The mother heifer worried they would take him from her, just because he looked different. The boys hopped out of the truck and dragged the calf from under her. They laughed and pointed at the calf. Unexpectedly, their little sister jumped out of the back of the truck
. She slowly approached the calf, and with a smile she reached out her hand. She gently stroked each of the calf’s heads, and kissed each of their noses. The boys were confused as to why she cared so much for the freak. The little girl continued to caress the newborn calf’s soft hair. She looked into his eyes with compassion. The mother heifer then noticed something peculiar about the little girl as well. She was missing an eye. She too was different.
The boys sighed and told their sister that she will have the rest of her life to pet the calf, and that they needed to go back home. They did not take the calf, and he returned back to the safety of his mother. The calf did not understand that he was different. All he knew was that the night was warm, and he was with his mother. He stared into the sky for the first time, and saw twice as many stars as his mother did.
