- You may all call me crazy, but I am a perfectly sane man. Here my story so I can prove too you ALL!
- Conflict
- Rising Action
- The narrator was introduced, he wants to prove his sanity to us by telling us how cleverly he hid a body, and only a sane man could have done that.
- Climax
- The narrator lives in the same building as an old man with a blind eye. The narrator claims that is evil because it is deformed and that it reminds him of a vulture.
- Falling Action
- In a course of 8 days, the narrator makes a plan to kill the old man to get "rid" of the eye. Each night he watches the old man sleep yet he can't see his eye.
- Resolution
- I DID IT I KILLED HIM!!
- One evening the old man hears the narrator and screams. Then the narrator pulls a mattress on him and suffocates him until he can't hear the old man's heart.
- The police show up because a neighbor reported screaming. The narrator tries to cover up his crime by saying he had a bad dream which caused him to scream and that the old man was out of the country.
- The story ends with the narrator going mad because he can still hear the old man's heart which grows louder and louder until eventually, he believes the police can hear it. He rips up the floor boards to reveal the dead old man and confesses to his crime.
