Esperanza's parents and her siblings moved to a small home on Mango street in Chicago, the house was beaten down but was still a step up from the old apartment. She expected something a bit better as a home.
THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET
Esperanza struggles to find out who is as a person and where she belongs in the world. She doesn't want to live in a beaten up old house all her life.
Esperanza is at a party, she noticeshow her feet are "growing bigger and bigger". That explains that she is growing.
Esperanza is jump roping with her friends, they started to sing a song that explains that without hips you will turn into a man. "I don't care what kind I get, as long as I get hips".
Esperanza wants to grow up and hopefully move out of the neighborhood she's in right now. She spends a lot of time with Sally who is very glamorous in her eyes. She decides to get a job of her own and an old man there forces her to kiss him.
THE FIRST JOB
Esperanza and Nenny sometimes go to the local pawn shop. One of the most descriptive environments, the book describes the cluttered shop full of "tables with their feet upside down" and "rows and rows of refrigerators".
