- Raskolnikov has woken up from fainting yet again, when Pulcheria and Dounia show up in his room. He is capable of waking up with the help of Razumihin, who is there for support. As he takes in his family, Pulcheria and Dounia become shocked by the status of living he is in. They are grief stricken and try to help; leading to criticizing.
- He has just awoken from a fainting episode...
- My dear son, Raskolnikov oh what has happened to you?! My boy!!!
- I AM NOT CRAZY MOTHER! Dounia does not deserve that... leave before I do something I'll regret.
- Raskolnikov admits to his mother and sister that he is completely against the idea of Dounia marrying Luzhin. As he does so he asks Raz to take them away. The readers are able to see that Raskolnikov notices Luzhin's predator appearance. He tries to save his sister, yet the mother continues insisting on the arranged marriage. Dounia herself thinks everything is okay in order to save her brother.
- Brother, this is out of love. This is for you. I must marry.
- My Ras, you don't mean that. You surely are acting out after the fainting. She must marry; for you!
- Pulcheria, I promise to leave the party and give Rodion my undivided attention. I am afraid of how he has been behaving, I do not want to see him lash out at all. It's best to leave him alone. Your son needs his time to reflect, and you must understand.
- I have no clue who I am leaving Raskolnikov with! What if something happens to him? Surely the landlady has a corner spot for my daughter and I.
- As Pulcheria and Dounia begin to leave Rodion, his mother becomes very stubborn. She insists on taking care of her son and being there for him at his lowest. She is worried for Raskolnikov; and decides to bring up the landlady. Dounia realizes things are worse than they seem.
- Staying the night in Petersburg... Raskolnikov really may be that bad!
- Trust me Pulcheria. Your son needs his space and it is all for the best. He is in good hands, I care for your son.
- Razumihin shows his kindness by further convincing Pulcheria that Raskolnikov is well taken care of. He convinces her by stating he will lead both women to find somewhere to stay and they can reach Zossimov to look after her son.
- Petersburg is nowhere near safe, I will be leading you all to Zossimov.
- After Razumihin and Zossimov visit Raskolnikov, they pay both young women a visit. When approaching Dounia, the doctor realizes that Razumihin really does have a reason for thinking she is beautiful (speaking of her as they visited Ras). Aside from this, both men inform the mother and sister of how Raskolnikov is doing. Despite the difficult timing for the family, Razumihin is jealous of the way Dounia attracts men.
