  • Due to tensions between France and Britain while trying to remain neutral, as well as impressment being enforced on American sailors by the British, James Madison decided to declare war with Great British
  • Yay we are war hawks and we like war

  • The Battle of Detroit, also known as the Battle of Fort Detroit or the Surrender of Fort Detroit, was a humiliating loss for the Americans early in the war. Tecumseh was captured during this battle
  • We are losing!

  • The British burn down the White House and tried to take over Baltimore but failed.
  • The failed bombardment of Fort McHenry forced the British to abandon their land assault on the crucial port city of Baltimore. This British defeat was a turning point in the War of 1812, leading both sides to reach a peace agreement later that year. Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the “Star-Spangled Banner'' after this.
  • The British attacked Andrew Jackson’s troops in New Orleans. Jackson wins. It was fought without the knowledge of the Treaty of Ghent.
  • The US and the British signed a peace treaty in Ghent, Belgium.
