To prove the crime was committed he had to confess he has committed adultery. To fully prove this they called John's wife Elizebeth Procter into the room to see if she would agree. For the first time, she lied thinking she would save his life. Instead, it backfired.
John's hanging

Eventually, After Abigail ran away the court realized they were calling people to be hanged over a lie. Sadly the court could not just say they were wrong for doing so, so they tried John for witch craft and he eventually backed into saying that he was a witch and was later hanged.
