  • Stage 1 France is Broke1789
  • This is so unfair. Why don't they have to pay taxes?

  • France became broke in many ways. First off they spent a lot of money helping America in the American revolution. Also a big part was that only the commoners (3rd estate) were paying taxes. The nobles and clergy weren't paying taxes only profiting from them.
  • Stage 3Declaration of rights of Man1789
  • Liberty, Equality, Fraternity
  • The court controlled by the nobles, ruled that the group should meet according to its old rules. This meant that each estate met and voted separately. This way, the votes by the first 2 estates would be able to outnumber the 3rd. The 3rd estate refused to accept the old rules. When the estates general met at the royal palace at Versailles the members of the 3rd estate refused to go. The commoners were tired of their vote not counting so they wanted to break free of the first 2 estates.
  • Stage 4Storming the Bastille 1789

  • At an indoor tennis court on the palace grounds the 3rd estate declared themselves the National Assembly of France. The members also swore the Oath of the Tennis Court promising to write a constitution for France. The revolution has begun.
  • The National Assembly passed the Declaration of rights of man. This document was a statement of the principles of the revolution. The assembly declared that all the people had rights of freedom and equality. 
  • On July 14, one group set off for the Bastille, a fortress and prison in Paris. At the Bastille, the crowed demanded the governor give them his cannons and guns. In the confusion a battle broke out. The enraged crowd surged into the Bastille and killed the governor, soldiers, and other officials.
