- How can you joke about such things?
- If we do not laugh, we will cry.#160; what you laugh at and make familiar can no longer frighten you.
- The family goes to the village with a surprise that Nazis are there to take them. They begin to worry, and when Fayge asks about the wedding, Shmuel gives#160; her hope by telling her that they will be eventually married.

- How can you laugh?
- They begin to load the truck and they realize they have no choice but to go, so they begin to pray and hope God will help them.

- We will be fed.
- After being loaded to the boxcars, they share stories as they sit there in fear. Gitl makes a joke and laughs, and after Hannah questions why, she says to make it less frightening.
- Camp P159
- At the camp, they just received a number and clothes. Gitl once again laughs, and Hannah questions. Gitl replies that there is no hope if there is no laughter.#160;
- Without laughter, there is no hope, without hope there is no life.
- Right after, they mention food and realize they are super hungry. Gitl once again is determined and says they will be fed.

- God only knows. Let us hope he tells the Germans
- Finally, on the way to the smokestack to be killed, Hannah tries to comfort her sad friends by telling them a happy story.
