  • Beginning around A.D 100,four complex cultures thrived in Peru.Like other pre-Inca cultures and the Inca who came later,the Moche showed great creativity in adapting to challenging environments.The greatest military power among pre-Inca cultures was the Wari culture,which dominated the high desert of central Peru from about A.D 500 to 1000.

  • The civilization Inca began as a small mountain culture that lived high in the Andes Mountains.In only a few hundred years,the Inca had conquered large parts of South America and governed a huge empire.The Inca created and controlled a large empire in South America.About the same time as the Aztec emerged in Mesoamerica,the Inca began their conquest of western South America.The Inca used their building skills to adapt to their mountain surroundings,they also built roads that helped them transport people and goods.

  • Native American cultures of the Pacific Northwest thrived in a land of plentiful rainfall and dense forest.The forest offered plentiful plants and game.With such abundance,populations grew,and complex societies developed without any need to farm.They developed tools for splitting and carving wood.With those tools,they built permanent homes and crafted everday necessities such as plates and utensils.

  • The Ancient Pueblo adapted to their environment by farming the arid land and building complex structures.The ancient Pueblo began to farm in various parts of the arid Southwest desert.They began to build villages with permanent structures on high plateaus or in canyons.They were skilled artisans who created baskets and pottery that were beautiful yet practical.
  • Mound builders,built huge mounds of earth.They relied mostly on hunting and gathering,but also tamed wild plants and farmed crops such as barley.The mounds served religious and ceremonial purposes.Some mounds like the Great Serpent Mound built by the Adena in southern Ohio,formed the shape of animals.
  • Native Americans who lived on the opposite side of North America relied on the plentiful wood and game from forests and woodlands that surrounded them.Over time,they developed sophisticated ways of governing themselves.Native American cultures in the East and Southeast developed complex political organizations.
