- What does an atom look like?
- Hi Bob, I'm thinking about what an atom is.
- Here, let's go on an adventure!
- Hey Tom! What are you pondering about?
- One of the earliest theories about how an atom looked was from J. J. Thomson. He thought that the atom was a positive sphere with the electrons mixed through it.
- Cool! But this doesn't seem like the right model. Let's go to another time period.
- This model is from 1909 by Ernest Rutherford. He discovered that atoms have a center called a nucleus. This nucleus is made up of smaller particles.
- That's certainly a neat discovery. Let's go to the most recent model!
- Bohr made another discovery that electrons move in circular paths around the nucleus. His model helped scientists predict the chemical properties of the element.
- This is similar to the current model of the atom. Let me show you the current model!
- Wow, that is a really amazing finding, but is this the current model?
