  • Setting the Stage for the Battle of YorktownHenry Clinton takes over the Carolinas and returns to the North. He leaves Cornwallis in the South so he can control the war there. Cornwallis eventually learned that Guerrillas kept the American cause alive. A man named Francis Marion and his crew of rebels called, "The Swamp Foxes" harassed the British with hit-and-run raids.
  • Setting the Stage for the Battle of Yorktown ContinuedNathanael Greene had a small army that lead Cornwallis's across the countryside and met them in small skirmishes. Eventually, Cornwallis got bored and settled into a town called Yorktown.
  • Battle of YorktownGeneral Washington sent his army (around 8,845) down to Yorktown and was joined by a French army of around 7,800 men. French warships blocked the Chesapeake Bay. The British were surrounded! The French warships fired upon the city and the armies blocked any escape or help by land.
  • Cornwallis SurrenderAt first, Cornwallis thought that the British navy would save them even while Yorktown was being blown to smithereens. He eventually surrendered. The lines of the French and the Americans stood side by side as the British soldiers left the city in defeat.
  • ImpactThe Battle of Yorktown caused the American Revolution to come to an end with the Americans on the winning side. When the news got to the British people they accepted it pretty easily. The king, however, took a little longer to accept defeat.
  • Marquis de LafayetteLafayette was born on September 6, 1757, in France. Lafayette was orphaned and rich. When he was 20 he went to fight in the American Revolution at his own expense. He wanted to earn glory for himself in battle. While in America he became good friends with General Washington and fought in the battle of Yorktown. He eventually died on May 20, 1834, at the age of 76.
