Dally discovers Ponyboy and Johnny starving in the church and so he takes them to Dairy Queen for to eat. There, Johnny reveals that he wants to turn himself into the cops. Disappointingly, Dally tells Johnny about his experience in prison, and how it hardened him and made him aloof.
Pony, Johnny and Dally go back to the when they see that the church is on fire. Pony and Johnny learn from a chaperone named Hank, that there are children in the burning church. Johnny and Ponyboy believe that the fire is their fault and gallantly charge in to save them, like knights in shining armor..

Johnny and Pony see the kids and start dropping them out of the window, like pebbles, landing them safely outside the church. While they are saving the last bit of children, THWACK! a piece of wood drops onto Johnny's back. The fire begins to spread quickly, which leaves no other option for Pony other than to fly out of window in order to survive.
After Pony runs out of the burning church, Dally hits him on the back. Dallas does this to stop a fire that is burning on Pony's back and is spreading. In the process, Pony keeled from the amount of smoke he inhaled. while Dally goes in to rescue Johnny.
Hastily, Pony, Johnny and Dally are rushed to the ambulance. During the ambulance ride, Hank talks to Pony, saying that he's an angel from heaven and talks about his amazing feat in saving the children. confused, Pony tells Hank about the past five days and how rough it had been.
Pony finds out that Darry and Sodapop have come to visit him and the boys. Pony goes to talk to them and realizes that Darry was crying for him, which he never did. At that moment, Ponyboy realized that Darry really did love him and because he loved him so much, he gave him tough love, in a means so that he could be a good person.
