Claudius confesses his sins and asks for forgiveness but knows he won't be forgiven because he is still deciding to sin to not give up everything he has now. Hamlet decides to not kill him.
Hamlet talks to his mother making her realize how terrible she really is. She then feels uncomfortable and calls for help. Polonius, who was hiding behind curtains tries making a move but instead gets stabbed to death by Hamlet who thought he was Claudius.
The ghost appears to remind Hamlet to be nice and talk to his mother and let g=her deal with her guilt on her own and a reminder to continue seeking revenge on Claudius.
