- Yanek lives in Karkow Poland with his mother and father and other family. One day the Nazi's take over the town and make his family move into the ghetto for other Jewish people. He no longer can go to his school or see his friends. They end up hiding from the Nazis in a pigeon coop.
- In chapters 9-12 Yanek is taken to Plazcow Concentration Camp. He is separated from his parents but he does find his Uncle Moshe. Uncle Moshe explains to him on how to act so that he isn't killed. He has no name, no emotion, and acts like no one. Yanek is made to work in the tailor shop.
- In Chapters 13 -15 Yanek is taken to the salt mine in a cattle car. He is but into barracks and taken to the mines. One of the people there is a former police officer from Krakow. After work one day Yanek saw the police officer was dead and probably killed by other prisoners because he helped the Nazis. The Nazi guards then beat the prisoners.
